1st time in Thailand, GC partners with allies to announce its success in developing innovations and utilizing pallets made from recycled plastic compounds.
March 4th, 2023, Bangkok: PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC), in collaboration with TPBI Public Company Limited (TPBI), Srithai Superware Public Company Limited (Srithai), and GC Logistics Solutions Co., Ltd. (GCL), have jointly announced the success in developing innovations and the utilization of warehouse pallets made from post-consumer resin (PCR), derived from used household plastic bags. This marks the first time in Thailand where such an innovation has been implemented. These circular pallets have been in actual used within the automated warehouse operations at GCL since the end of 2023.
Mr. Saroj Putthammawong, Chief Operating Officer of the Value-added Products at GC stated, “From the initial concept together with TPBI and our group of partners in developing sustainable products through various continuous activities over the past years, today, GC has announced the success in developing pallets made from PCR HDPE Compound recycled plastic pellets, in collaboration with partners throughout the entire value chain. This marks the first practical use in Thailand and represents one of the tangible successes in managing according to the circular economy concept. It also reflects that GC's HDPE plastic pellets, aside from being a low-carbon product that emits 2.6 times less greenhouse gas than the country's average greenhouse gas emissions as certified by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO), are strong enough to be mixed with up to 30% PCR recycled pellets and produce a product with very high strength, such as the pallets used in automated warehouse operations at GCL.”
Ms. Chamaiporn Uerpairojkit, CEO of TPBI Public Company Limited (TPBI), stated, "TPBI is an organization that focuses on conducting business sustainably in line with the circular economy. In 2018, we launched the 'Circular Project' to raise awareness and collect used stretch plastic waste nationwide. This initiative focused on recycling, researching, and transforming this waste into various innovative products, creating high-quality PCR HDPE Compound resin specifically designed for manufacturing pallets. One pallet is equivalent to the production from 3,353 used plastic bags, helping reduce carbon emissions by 188 KgCO2e per pallet, which is a 146% reduction in carbon emissions compared to regular plastic pallets. I would like to thank all the partners who have collaborated to develop the project successfully and make it operational. TPBI will not stop developing PCR Compound innovations to be more environmentally friendly and of higher quality. We hope that today's success will be the starting point for expanding the use of pallets from PCR plastic resin in other industries beyond GCL in the future."
Mr.Chaiwat Kulphattaravanich, Deputy Managing Director of Srithai Superware Public Company Limited (Srithai), said, "As a manufacturer and distributor of plastic products in various industries, including household items made from melamine, Srithai has always supported the development of product innovations alongside sustainability. We are very pleased to be part of this project's success. As a globally recognized manufacturer and molder of plastic pallets, Srithai is at the forefront of innovation and expertise. The company champions the use of high-quality PCR plastic resins for the testing, production, and molding pallets, with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. By incorporating renewable energy into our production processes, we actively contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to environmental stewardship and our efforts to combat the escalating challenges of climate change. Following this success, Srithai is ready to fully support partners in the production of pallets from high-quality PCR plastic resins with environmentally friendly plastic product manufacturing processes, using energy-saving innovations and renewable energy in the production process to meet the increasing demand for environmentally friendly products both domestically and internationally in the future."
Mrs. Panida Chinayone, Senior Vice President:GC Logistics Solution stated, "As a joint venture between GC and WHA, offering comprehensive logistics solutions, we are delighted to have been part of the testing and providing feedback on the usage requirements over the years. Today, we have successfully developed high-quality PCR pallets that are finally usable. By using 500 recycled pallets produced from used plastic bags in our automated warehouse management since the end of last year, we have helped reduce plastic waste in the country and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. This reflects a clear and tangible logistics business management with innovation alongside sustainability. GCL is ready to support innovations that contribute to sustainability and environmental preservation with our partners in the future."
This achievement underscores the progress in developing innovative products and solutions crafted from recycled plastic resins, specifically Post-Consumer Resin (PCR), derived from consumer-used plastics. Facilitated by our partners, this initiative focuses on creating high-quality, durable products designed for practical application. It champions the advancement of sustainable plastic alternatives, underpinning a business strategy that prioritizes environmental stewardship with the ambitious objective of reaching Net Zero by 2050.
