GC Advances Integrated Biorefinery, Moving Forward with Bio-Chemicals and Bio-Polymers to Drive High-Value, Low-Carbon Business

Map Ta Phut, Rayong, Thailand – 23 April 2025 – PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC), a global leader in chemicals for better living, is accelerating its biorefinery productions, building upon its success as Thailand’s first producer of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). GC is now continuing the production of high-value bio-chemicals and bio-polymers that can serve a wide range of industrial applications in response to global demand for sustainable alternative materials. This initiative strengthens Thailand’s bioeconomy, enhances the country’s competitiveness on the international stage, and aligns with GC’s commitment to driving innovation through differentiated technologies and its High Value & Low Carbon Business strategy.

In addition to its SAF production capacity of 6 million liters per year in the first phase, GC is utilizing its expertise in refining and developing advanced chemicals to develop a co-processing system that integrates seamlessly with existing refinery units. This process transforms used cooking oil (UCO) into high-value bio-chemicals and bio-polymers, catering to industries seeking sustainable, environmentally responsible materials.

Currently, GC has commenced commercial production of three key bio-based products: Bio-Propylene, used in rigid packaging, toys, and automotive parts; Bio-BD (Bio-Butadiene), used in tire and sports footwear manufacturing; and Bio-PTA (Bio-Purified Terephthalic Acid), used in polyester fibers and PET bottles. These products serve end markets in the chemical, rubber, and packaging industries, respectively. GC also plans to expand into additional bio-based products, including Bio-Naphtha (a base feedstock for plastics and chemicals), Bio-PE (Bio-Polyethylene) for plastic bags and food packaging, and Bio-MEG (Bio-Monoethylene Glycol) for polyester fibers and PET bottles.

GC’s biorefinery also plays a crucial role in enhancing the value of local agricultural resources and waste materials. Its products offer performance comparable to fossil-based materials while delivering significantly lower carbon footprints. This not only helps reduce waste and increase community income but also drives a tangible circular economy — in line with GC’s commitment to being a leader in low-carbon, sustainable growth.

Mr. Toasaporn Boonyapipat, President of GC, stated: “GC is not only the first SAF producer in Thailand but is also enhancing the potential of our biorefinery operations to offer innovative bio-chemical and bio-polymer products as alternatives to fossil-based materials. These solutions address the needs of global markets focused on sustainability and future-ready industries. Our high-value bio-products are derived from renewable resources like used cooking oil, fully supporting Thailand’s Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy model and reinforcing the company’s strategy to grow our High Value & Low Carbon Business.”

GC’s bio-based products have received ISCC PLUS certification (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Plus), a globally recognized sustainability standard. This ensures responsible sourcing of bio-based and renewable materials and helps end-product brands meet the growing environmental expectations of consumers with confidence.

GC continues to invest in technological development and global partnerships to deliver comprehensive chemical solutions, reinforcing its role as a pioneering industry leader driving toward a truly sustainable future.
